The maternal medicine network aims to streamline access to care, depending on individual need and clinical urgency.
Acute issues in pregnancy
Each maternity unit has a unit-specific protocol for referrals of pregnant patients with acute issues, from non-maternity settings.
Care of chronic medical issues
Some pregnant women need additional care and support in pregnancy. If they have medical conditions, then this may need referral to their local maternal medicine team. For some women with the most complex conditions, which are uncommon or can be life-threatening, care should be provided by designated specialist centres to concentrate expertise and improve outcomes.
In line with national guidance, conditions are divided into three categories (A, B and C) which gives a guide for where the care could be provided.
